TYRES

How to read the Tyre Size fitted in my vehicle ?

faq1

A. Width : The width of your tyre, in millimetres, measured from sidewall to sidewall.

B. Profile : This is the ratio of the tyre’s cross-section to its width, expressed as a percentage. An aspect ratio of 65, for example, indicates that the tyre’s height is 65% of its width.

C. Rim Size: The diameter (height) of the wheel in inches.

D. Load index: Your tyre’s load index relates to its maximum carrying capacity (in kg). You’ll find the load rating of your tyre on the sidewall, just to the right of the diameter.

E. Speed Index : The speed Index is the maximum speed for a tyre when it is correctly inflated and being used under load. The speed rating is the letter at the end of the sidewall, after the load index number. A tyre with a speed rating of V, for example, has a maximum speed of 240 km/h.

What is Manufacturing Date / DOT of tyres sold on GETMYTYRE ?

Tyres sold on GETMYTYRE are always of the current year or the preceding two years.

For example : All tyres sold in the year 2022 will be of manufacturing year 2021or 2020, No tyres of manufacturing year 2019 will ever be sold in 2021.

If the customer wants to still check the DOT, you may kindly get in touch with our Customer support team.

How to Read the Manufacturing Date (DOT) of the Tyres

Each tyre has an imprinted DOT code on the sidewall. DOT stands for the Department of Transportation and the code is made of numbers and letters – they indicate the place and date of the tyre’s manufacture.

The last 4 digits of the DOT Code represent the Week and Year of manufacture.

For example: In the photo given below the last 4 digits of the DOT Code are “4020” which implies:

Week of the Tyre = 40

Year of the Tyre =2020

That means this tyre was manufactured in the 40th week of Year 2020.

What are Homologated Tyres ? alias `` OEM FITMENT TYRES ``

faq3

Tyres approved by car makers are called “homologated”. Technical term for a tyre that’s been  approved by a car manufacturer is “homologated”. The car manufacturer is identified on the tyre’s sidewall using their specific code.

Some of them are more easy to decode – Mercedes, for example, is MO, Audi is AO, but others aren’t. N1? No, not Nissan – it’s actually Porsche.

Are homologated tyres safer than generic tyres / Non homologated tyres?

Homologated tyres are a better and safer choice and specifically built to the car’s manufacturers specific requirements.

Non Homologated tyres are no competition to the homologated tyres which are engineered to provide you with optimum handling, grip and braking performance and are specifically engineered to suit your car. With homologated tyres the suspension works in harmony with the tyre to enhance the ride, handling and acceleration. So if you truly want to get your car to the original performance characteristics it is capable of, investing in the correct homolagated tyres is an absolute must.

What is the Load Index and Speed Index of Tyres

The Load Index of a tyre is a numerical code written on each tyre. It denotes the maximum weight that each tyre of your vehicle can carry at the maximum speed given by the manufacturer. It is generally a two- or three-digit number which represents the load-bearing limit of each tyre.

Load Index Load in Kg per Tyre Load Index Load in Kg per Tyre
90 600 110 1060
91 615 111 1090
92 630 112 1120
93 650 113 1150
94 670 114 1180
95 690 115 1215
96 710 116 1250
97 730 117 1285
98 750 118 1320
99 775 119 1360
100 800 120 1400
101 825 121 1450
102 850 122 1500

107 975 127 1750
108 1000 128 1800
109 1030 129 1850

The speed index of a tyre indicates the maximum speed at which the tyre can be driven safely under its approved load capacity. You must use tyres with the right speed rating without which you would be putting lives at risk.

At high speeds, the wheels turn faster which generates more heat. If you do not use tyres that can cope with the extra heat, the tyres may get damaged, or worse, burst.

Speed Rating KM/Hour
L 120
M 130
N 140
P 150
Q 160
S 180
T 190
U 200
H 210
V 240
W 270
Y 300
Z 240

Together, the Load Index and Speed Index is called as the Speed Rating of the tyre.

How to maintain a Tyre's life ?
  1. Keep your tyres properly inflated.
  2. Rotate your tyres regularly to extend the life of them and improve performance. It’s recommended you rotate your tyres once every 10,000 to 12,000 km or 6 months.
  3. Get a wheel alignment every year, or 25,000 km to avoid uneven tread wear.
  4. Clean your tyres with silicone to keep them looking new.
  5. Don’t mix and match tyres. While it may seem more cost effective to replace one or two tyres at a time, having mismatched tyres can lead to rapid and uneven tread wear, or even mechanical issues and can be major safety problem.

RUNFLAT TYRES

What are Runflat Tyres ?

Run flat tyres are tyres on which you can continue driving after a puncture so you can take time get to an auto shop or find a safe, level area to change your tyre. You can’t drive on them indefinitely, though. Check the manufacturer’s specifications to find out how fast and how far you can drive on your run flat tyres. Bridgestone run-flat tyres will allow continued operation even after a loss of some or all inflation pressure for up to 50 miles (80 km) at a maximum speed up to 50 mph (80 km/h.)

Below are the different Terms used by Different Brands for the Runflat Tyres.

BRAND TERM-1 TERM-2
PIRELLI RFT (RUN-FLAT TECHNOLOGY)
CONTINENTAL SSR (SELF SUPPORTING RUN-FLAT TYRE)
BRIDGESTONE RFT (RUN-FLAT TECHNOLOGY)
MICHELIN ZP (ZERO PRESSURE)
GOODYEAR ROF (RUN ON FLAT) EMT (EXTENDED MOBILITY TECHNOLOGY)
DUNLOP ROF (RUN ON FLAT) DSST (DUNLOP SELF SUPPORTING TECHNOLOGY)
FIRESTONE RFT (RUN-FLAT TYRE)
HANKOOK HRS (HANKOOK RUN-FLAT SYSTEM)
YOKOHAMA RUN-FLAT ZPS (ZERO PRESSURE SYTEM)
How do Runflat tyres work ?

There are two primary types of run flat tire systems: the self-supporting system and the support ring system.

In most self-supporting run flat tire systems, the tire features reinforced sidewall construction that will continue supporting the vehicle in the event of air loss. This construction allows continued operation after the loss of air pressure up to the speed and distance specified by the manufacturer.

self supporting rft

Support ring run flat tire systems, on the other hand, employ a ring of hard rubber or another structure that can support the vehicle’s weight in an air loss condition.

rft support ring system

Since they continue performing even though they’re “flat,” all run flat tires, regardless of the specific system type, may only be used on a vehicle equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). The TPMS alerts you as soon as one of your tires loses pressure. Without it, you might not know you were driving on an underinflated tire.

Benefits of Runflat tyres ?

You don’t have to change your tire in dangerous or uncomfortable conditions. This is perhaps the biggest benefit of run flat tires and is the one of the reasons why they were designed. With conventional tires, you have to replace a flat on the spot or have your car towed.

In a puncture situation, run flats are more stable than conventional tires. Since they’re made to support your vehicle even when they contain no air, run flat tires will help you maintain better control in a complete air loss situation than conventional tires.

As consumers continue rating safety high on the list of features they look for in a vehicle, the popularity of run flat tires is expected to grow. Since run flat tires work reliably with interconnected technologies like TPMS, it may only be a matter of time before they become the norm rather than the exception in new vehicles.
